Chapter 4 · 4.7
Chat and activity for a file
Nextcloud keeps track of what happens to every file. And you can discuss it with others, without separate emails.
Activity: who did what?
- Right-click the file and choose Details.
- Open the Activity tab in the sidebar (1).

You see when the file was created, changed, renamed or shared, and by whom. This way, you can tell, for example, whether your colleague has already saved the new version. At the top of the tab, you can also leave a short comment on the file under New comment.
Want to see the activity of all your files and apps together? Open the Activity app in the top bar. There, you can filter on the left by, for example, files, sharing or calendar.
Chat: discuss a file
In the Chat tab (1), you talk to everyone who has access to the file. If you haven't shared the file with anyone yet, you'll see Discuss this file. In that case, first click Share this file (2) and share it with someone (see Sharing with a user from your own Nextcloud). Then type your message at the bottom and send it. Use @ and a name to mention someone, and they'll receive a notification.

Available in packages with Office. Chat for a file works through Talk, and Talk is included in packages with at least one Office licence. Read more about Talk in What is Talk and who has it?.
Tip: the chat belongs to the file. If you share the file with someone, that person can also read the conversation and join in.
