Chapter 3 · 3.4
Approving login with a notification on another device
Are you already logged in on another device, for example in the Nextcloud app on your phone? Then you can also approve a new login with a notification. You don't need to type in a code: you get a notification on your other device and tap to approve.
Turning it on
- Click your profile picture or initials in the top right.
- Choose Settings.
- Click Security on the left.
Under Nextcloud notification, switch on the toggle Use Nextcloud notifications for two-factor authentication (1).

How to log in with it
- Log in with your username and password.
- At the second step, choose Nextcloud notification.
- Get your other device where you're already logged in: your phone with the Nextcloud app, or another browser.
- A notification about the new login appears there. Approve it.
- The first screen carries on automatically.
Please note: Only approve a login that you're doing yourself at that moment. If you get such a notification while you're not logging in, reject it and change your password (Changing or forgetting your password).
Tip: This method only works if you're genuinely still logged in somewhere else. The code by email always keeps working. Also set up an authenticator app or back-up codes as well (Setting up an authenticator app and saving backup codes).
